Take your navigation abilities beyond the basics through two days of intensive classroom and field instruction. This advanced course is designed for students who want to improve precision, confidence, and decision-making while navigating challenging terrain. Learn advanced terrain analysis, route planning, precision compass techniques, dead reckoning, drift compensation, advanced resection, UTM navigation, and low-visibility navigation through realistic hands-on exercises.
This course builds on fundamental navigation skills and focuses on advanced techniques used for accurate movement and decision-making in complex terrain. Students will learn advanced terrain analysis, terrain compartmentalization, mobility corridors, macro and micro route selection, precision compass techniques, dead reckoning, drift compensation, aiming off, 90-degree offset navigation, advanced resection, UTM navigation, route planning, low-visibility navigation principles, and lost position recovery through classroom instruction and practical field exercises.
Day 1 focuses on classroom instruction, where students develop advanced navigation knowledge through map study, route planning, terrain analysis, plotting exercises, and scenario-based problem solving. Day 2 takes those skills into the field, where students apply advanced navigation techniques in realistic terrain under instructor guidance. This combination of classroom learning and practical application helps develop accuracy, confidence, and sound decision-making.
This advanced course is designed for students who already understand the fundamentals of map and compass navigation and want to develop greater precision in real-world environments. Students will work with detailed topographic maps, perform advanced route planning, navigate using UTM coordinates, recover from navigational errors, and complete realistic field exercises that reinforce classroom instruction. Individual coaching and small class sizes ensure every student receives personal attention throughout the course.
Our programs are designed to provide students with hands-on, practical experience, giving them the skills and confidence they need to excel in their chosen field.
This course is designed for students who have completed a basic land navigation course or already possess fundamental map and compass skills. It is ideal for experienced hikers, hunters, backpackers, search and rescue volunteers, outdoor professionals, emergency preparedness enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to develop advanced navigation skills through realistic classroom and field training.
Class Size: Small classes for individualized instruction
Prerequisite: Completion of Module 1 Basic Land Navigation or equivalent map and compass experience is recommended.
Training Format: Day 1 classroom instruction followed by Day 2 practical field navigation exercises.
Students should arrive prepared with appropriate outdoor clothing, sturdy hiking footwear, food, water, and personal essentials for a full day in the field. A sighting mirror compass is required for this course. Students who do not own a compass may reserve a loaner prior to class. A complete mandatory equipment list is available before each scheduled course.
At Fire Wolf Self Reliance, we believe confidence is built through experience—not just classroom instruction.
Our Advanced Land Navigation Course combines professional classroom training with realistic field exercises, allowing students to immediately apply what they learn in real terrain.
Unlike large group classes, we intentionally keep enrollment limited so every student receives individual coaching throughout the course. Questions are encouraged, mistakes become learning opportunities, and every exercise is designed to develop confidence, precision, and sound decision-making.
Whether your goal is backcountry travel, hunting, search and rescue, emergency preparedness, or simply becoming more capable outdoors, our objective is to provide practical navigation skills that you can confidently apply long after the course has ended.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the confidence and practical experience to plan advanced routes, navigate accurately in complex terrain, recover from navigational errors, and make informed decisions under challenging conditions. More importantly, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of terrain, greater confidence in your abilities, and practical skills that can be applied during hiking, hunting, backpacking, emergency preparedness, search and rescue, and other outdoor activities.
