2-Day Overnight Navigation & Field Skills Course
Module 2 is an entry-level wilderness self-reliance course tailored to teach practical outdoor skills, sound decision-making, and environmental awareness through immersive field training.
This course is not about “roughing it.” It emphasizes preparation, prevention, and confidence—learning how to function calmly and effectively in outdoor settings using essential tools, knowledge, and good judgment.
Training occurs in authentic outdoor conditions and includes an overnight field component to reinforce navigation skills and practical techniques in a controlled, instructional environment.
What You Will Learn

Prerequisites
• Module 1: Basic Land Navigation is required OR • Module 1 and Module 2 may be combined into a 3-day training experience
Course Details
• Duration: 2 days (overnight field training)
• Location: Kennedy Meadows, CA
• Class Size: Small groups for quality instruction
• Age Requirement: 10+ (minors must be accompanied by a guardian)
Required Gear List –
To ensure your safety, comfort, and learning during this 2-day field training, please bring the following items. This survival gear checklist emphasizes practical, functional items—there's no need for anything expensive or specialized.
1. Backpack or Rucksack
A durable pack large enough to carry your gear, food, water, hygiene items, and personal first aid supplies. You will be living out of this pack for the duration of the course.
2. Shelter System
Choose one of the following:
• One survival blanket (Recommended: Arcturus Heavy Duty Emergency Blanket, 5 × 7)
OR • A small, packable tent or tarp with at least six tent stakes
3. Sleeping System
• A sleeping bag rated for expected seasonal temperatures
4. Water & Cooking Kit
Choose one of the following:
• Single-wall stainless steel water bottle with nesting cup
OR • Military-style stainless steel canteen with cup
Minimum size: 32 oz. Additional requirement: Bring two gallons of drinking water.
5. Fire Kit
• One ferrocerium rod (5–6 inches long recommended)
• Two disposable lighters (BIC recommended)
6. Light Source
• One headlamp or flashlight
• Two extra sets of batteries
7. Navigation & Notes
• Compass with adjustable declination and a sighting mirror (Recommended: Suunto MC-2 — loaner compasses available)
• Small weather-resistant notebook
• Pen or pencil
8. Cordage
• At least 100 feet of 550 paracord
9. Signal Cloth
Choose one of the following:
• Two bright orange bandanas or equivalent 100% cotton cloth
OR • One bright orange shemagh
10. Knife
• One fixed-blade, full-tang knife with a 4–5 inch blade
• Non-serrated
• No cut-outs or perforations
11. Clothing & Footwear
• Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing
• Sturdy footwear suitable for uneven terrain
Not permitted:
• Flip-flops
• Sandals
• Heels or wedges
Food & Meals
• Bring enough food and snacks for the full course duration. Students will be cooking and preparing meals in a camp-style environment.
